Pigue's fifth win is a huge step up for himself and his teammate. It was Piquet's sixth straight victory in this event and just his second career win at this event. Piquet's win also helps Estrella to move up on the overall standings and into the top five for the second consecutive season.

While Pigue's win was certainly a huge achievement for the young Spanish rider, the victory was hardly an automatic one. It wasn't until late in the stage that Piquet broke up the race and made his way across to second position for what seemed like an eternity. It seemed that after two days of the race where Pigue and Estrella were in contention and the race was still going strong, Pigue finally hit his first big stride and he rode onto the final climb up the Aitape, taking second on the stage and breaking away from the rest of the field. With Piquet's victory, Estrella will now be the first team to win an individual time trial at the Tour de France.

Pigue's first time trial victory came at stage four. A solid lead out for the final five kilometers saw Pigue and Cofidis rider, Antoine Duchesne, ride together in a bid to put together a fast-paced, flat time trial that would allow them to hold off Nairo Quintana and Quintana's team for fourth place.

The finish line looked set to be a stage that would finish the young Spaniard on the podium. However, with the clock ticking down on the final day of racing, Piquet pulled away from his teammate to put himself in position to take the victory.

"We didn't think he would ride up the Aitape. He was not fast at it. It was only after the race when he decided to go up the Aitape that he was ready to make a move for the win," Estrella teammate, Geraint Thomas said of the stage victory. "It's a stage to the top. I think when he has a chance to win, I would ride with him. But that's not the case for this time."

Estrella won the time trial on the final day and they didn't get anything out of this one. Pigue has one of his best time trial victories at the Tour and with that, he was once again given his biggest chance to win a general classification race.
