Latham victorious as labor adopts immigration policies

This week the Federal Trade Commission, a Federal regulatory agency, voted unanimously to require American companies to hire immigrants and to pay immigrants decent wages. American employers who have not adopted the commission's immigration policy (i.e. those with an H1N1 status in the current immigration system or who do not have an H1N1 classification) will need to raise wages by $10 to $13 per hour annually.

The vote also took down the American-born husband and wife who employed this family from working for their company in 2013, thus ending their H1N1 status. After this unfortunate event the couple's employer took another look at its H1N1 classification, and the family returned and resumed their H1N1 status, albeit with a lower wage floor this time around. Since the Federal Labor Department has given no guidance on the exact details of the new standards (aside from an implied agreement not to raise wages on H1N1 status for new hires), the question of what to do about employers who choose not to comply with the new regulations has become a pressing one that many labor unions and non-profits are looking into.

American firms will have until November 2016 to meet these new wage rules. Many of them will face big, costly fines if they fail. Even after the U.S. Federal Reserve begins scaling back its quantitative easing program (QE) to its low-interest nature, the Fed will likely be reluctant to raise interest rates until after the 2018 election. To keep interest rates as low as possible during the coming years and to preserve the value of the dollar, the Fed has a great deal of leverage to raise interest rates. If it chooses to raise rates too soon, it can easily lose significant money by raising rates too quickly and without adequate price stability.

While these regulations raise the wages of immigrant workers”which is to say all workers”they leave the wages of American-born workers low by giving American employees the power to keep paying their share of the cost of bringing in labor. If the wage of American workers is not enough to pay the cost of the benefits provided by American-born workers, American workers”particularly those who have H1N1 status”have to pay to bring in the American workers needed to pay the costs of those benefits (e.g. the cost of bringing in a health insurance policy) or their own benefits. That is why the legislation to pass the wage floor is important, and it is also why labor unions are taking action against companies that do not abide by the new laws.
